How to Potty Train your Child in Less than a Day

Potty Training your child can seem like a monumental task.  But with this method it can be done in less than a day.  I have read about this method first from Dr. Phil, but have added a slight twist to it which has proved to be very effective for both of my children.  Now I’ll get started with explaining the basics because these are identical to the original method.   You need to first get the following items.  This should be easy as I’m sure most people with children have these at their home.

1. A baby doll (preferably one that wets)
2. A Potty Chair.  I recommend this one by the way: Baby Bjorn Potty Chair
3. Big boy/girl underwear (not diapers)
4. Lots of water (or other liquid) for your child to drink

It is suggested to wait until your child is 2 years of age before trying this method.  However, I was successful with both of my children at around 20 months.

The first step is to put the big boy/girl underwear on the baby doll and simulate the doll in the process of going to the potty.  Sounds silly, I know.  But it works, so bear with me.

Make sure your child is observing this.  Make sure to have a name for the doll and call it by name.  Feed it something to drink.  Then walk it to the potty chair, remove its underwear, and sit it on the potty chair.  Pretend it is using the potty.

Next, we need to make a big deal out of this.  Act super excited.  Make it seem like this is a reason to celebrate.  Jump up and down, raise your arms in the air, blow your party horns if you have them.  Your child will make the connection that what just happened with the doll is a great thing to do.
Tell your child they can tell that character all about it once they go to the potty too.  Tell them they can report this to Mickey Mouse, Dora, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, whoever.

Finally, the steps we’ve been waiting for.  Take the diaper off your child and put the big boy/girl underwear on them.  Give them lots to drink so they are taking in a lot of fluid.  This is so they will have to go to the potty themselves much quicker.  Remember, the quicker the better.  They ARE sponges, but still the quicker we can act on their sensory memory the more effective this method will be.  Next, ask your child if he/she needs to go to the potty.  If he says no, that is ok.  It won’t be long.

This is important.  If he does have an accident in his underwear, do not scold him.  We need to maintain a positive experience.  If we scold him, this will be a setback instead of a gain.  If he does have an accident, take him to the potty and sit him down.  Do this repetitively, about 10 times.  Eventually your child will go.  This is effective because of the muscle memory that is built in your child sitting down, getting back up, and then sitting down again.

Once your child goes, party all over again.  Make sure to have him call his favorite character, and have a friend play along to pretend like that character.

If you child has an accident in the future, make sure to take him to the potty as you did before and repetitively sit him on the potty until he goes.  This continues the muscle memory building and before long your child will be trained and ready to wear underwear like the big kids.
